Iceland wedding venues

My 9 favorite venues in Iceland for weddings and elopements

Looking to get married in Iceland? This beautiful little island in the North Atlantic has so many options. Whether you’re looking to bring guests with you for a party after your ceremony — or if you’re wanting an intimate elopement that then turns into your honeymoon. You can choose anything from Michelin starred restaurants in the capital, Reykjavík, or to get married inside a glacier.

Iceland is where I am originally from and I’ve either shot at these locations before or visited them multiple times. I am currently based on the east coast of the US and spend my time between Iceland and my home in Connecticut.

The Glacier Lagoon

Here’s another hugely popular spot in southeast Iceland, and for good reason. It is hard to beat the beauty of the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. There are multiple spots around the lagoon to host a small ceremony and pictures. I’d recommend the spots further away from the main entry areas.

Pricing starts at $0 and permits may be required.

Hotel Budir and Budir Black Church

Budir Black Church is arguably one of the more recognizable churches in Iceland. What fewer people know is that the nearby Hotel Budir is an amazing venue with an on-site restaurant and bar. Perfect for folks who want to have a wedding weekend in Iceland.

Pricing for the chapel ranges from $300 to $450

Pricing for the hotel venue starts at $4,000

The Blue Lagoon

Probably the most known landmark in Iceland. An accident in 1976 caused the formation of the Blue Lagoon. Just 25-30 years ago, this was a bathing spot with a wood shed to change in, and now it is a 5 star hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant. The Retreat Hotel at the Blue Lagoon hosts all weddings there and it is luxury all the way.

Pricing for a wedding at the Blue Lagoon starts at $19,000

Raudfeldsgja

More of an elopement ceremony and portrait location, this gorge on the Snæfellsnes peninsula is ideal for couples who want to have an intimate day, eloping and exploring the best day trip in Iceland.

Pricing is free, permits may be required.

Domkirkjan of Reykjavik

One of the oldest churches in Reykjavík, Domkirkjan is in my opinion the best venue for a more traditional and religious wedding in Iceland. The church is right downtown which gives you a easy walking distance to reception venues like Iðnó or any of the best restaurants in Reykjavik.

Pricing starts at $200 for an hour rental

Hofskirkja

I always recommend this tiny turf-church in southeast Iceland to couples who want to have their wedding pictures at the Glacier Lagoon. Hofskirkja can seat up to 30 people but it actually shines better when ceremonies are held outside in the ‘backyard’ of the church.

Pricing starts at $400 for the church rental and wedding services from the local priest.

Ion Adventure Hotel

Looking for something that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. ION Adventure Hotel in Nesjavellir is in a highly active geothermal area. It can host elopements and larger weddings for up to 200 guests. It is comfortably close to Thingvellir National Park for gorgeous wedding portraits.

Pricing starts at $1700

Iðnó

Iðnó is one of Reykjavik’s premier wedding and event venues. It’s also one of the main venues at the yearly Iceland Airwaves music festival which takes place every fall. The venue is right in downtown Reykjavik and is what most would call a ballroom style venue, the location is perfect for couples who want to keep the party going and check out the local nightlife scene in Reykjavik after their reception.

The venue can accommodate up to 110 seated guests and up to 290 standing.

Pricing starts at $2100

Árbæjarsafn Open Air Museum

Árbæjarsafn is primarily a museum in Reykjavik’s Árbær neighborhood showing buildings, objects, artifacts, and gives visitors a peek at how Icelanders lived centuries ago. There is a tiny turf church and a reception hall (pictured) called Lækjargötuhús that hosts weddings, christenings, and other events.

The church can host up to 20 people and the reception hall has room for 60 sitting.

Prices start at $750 for both
