A Vintage LGBTQ+ Wedding During Pride Weekend
Total love and happiness in Pride month
The nature of marriage is that, through its enduring bond, two persons together can find other freedoms, such as expression, intimacy, and spirituality. This is true for all persons, whatever their sexual orientation.
- Justice Anthony Kennedy
I simply love these words from Justice Anthony Kennedy’s Supreme Court majority opinion on same-sex marriage on June 26th, 2015. The ruling that made marriage equal.
It made Randi & Shelbie’s wedding day just a little bit more special, that it was held on the 6th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling and during Pride month. They reached out a few months before on the wedding planning website The Knot and we set up an engagement session and a full day wedding day shoot via Zoom (obviously, haha). We had their engagement photos set up at 5:30 pm and at 5:15 it was pouring!!! Like out of a bucket, pouring. The skies cleared up but we were left with a tiny drizzle that made the session just special. I didn’t know soft serve and light rain went so well together. See a few pics below.
It is days like these that make me so happy and grateful that I get to be a wedding photographer for a living. Randi & Shelbie’s wedding ceremony and reception were held in Randi’s parents’ backyard and they looked to the mid and latter parts of the 20th century for inspiration. Randi rented and borrowed mid century modern furniture and decor along with items from their apartment, it really felt personal and unique.
We started off at Shelbie’s parents’ house where she was getting ready along with her family and bridesmaids.
Randi & Shelbie’s wedding ceremony was a true dream for a wedding photographer like me, it was in an open space in a backyard that meant that I could move freely to capture them from all the possible angles. One of my favorite images from this day happened as Shelbie turned a corner and Randi saw her for the first time.
Shelbie’s Maid of Honor spoke about true love and marriage equality and quoted aforementioned Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy to joy and applause from family and guests. Joy that remained in the air for the rest of the day and night!
