A Stunning Romantic Wedding Theme I’ll Never Forget

Saying ‘I do’ before your wedding guests should be one of the happiest moments of your life. But to create the perfect wedding ceremony and reception, you might need some inspiration for the theme.

I recently attended a stunning romantic-themed wedding that simply blew me away with all the beautiful décor and the fine attention to detail. So here, I’d like to share some of my thoughts about what I saw to help you get inspired to start planning your big day too!

Theme and décor

The first thing to decide when you start planning your wedding is the theme. For example, you might consider timeless classic, Bohemian, modern or rustic weddings. But having settled on romantic, what decorative elements can be used?

At the wedding I attended, there was a slideshow during the best man’s speech. The images were projected onto a large screen, beautifully telling the story of the bride and groom in a moving way.

This, alongside the color theme, flowers and décor, set the tone perfectly, and here are a few of my thoughts on how to use these elements to create a similar romantic theme for your wedding.

The photo slideshow

"The photo presentation was a huge highlight. During the speech, the slideshow I put together showed the happy couple’s lives leading up to the wedding day — starting with photos from when they were just little babies. I ran the entire slideshow through a wedding photo company and it came back perfect to be shown!"

Many of the older photos were from before digital photography was a thing, but through fixing, editing and colorizing, they were all brought right up to date. The photos of when they first met were impossibly romantic, and there was even one photo that was edited to make it look like the two of them were playing together as babies. It was so believable that I even heard some people asking if they really had known each other when they were children!

People were so impressed, and I won’t be surprised to see something similar at other weddings I attend in the future!

Romantic colors

A huge part of the tone of a wedding is created by the colors you choose. If you want a romantic wedding, red might seem an obvious choice. However, in reality, most people avoid vibrant reds because they’re too aggressive and overpowering.

Much better is to choose subtler tones like soft pinks, light greens or mauve – and at the wedding I attended, the colors they used to create a romantic feel were based around delicate blues.

The flowers

With a color scheme chosen, you can then think about the flowers, and again, soft colors that complement the theme are recommended. For example, at this wedding, the light blues of the main theme were perfectly complemented by the delicate pinks and creams of the elegant floral arrangements.

The ceremony

The ceremony itself is one of the main parts of any wedding, and you’ll want to make sure this section follows the same tone you’ve established with the theme and décor you’ve chosen. Key aspects to pay attention to include the location or setting where the ceremony takes place as well as the wedding dress worn by the bride, groom and everyone else involved.

Let’s look at some of your options and how they did it at the wedding I attended.

The location

Many wedding venues can be suitable to create a romantic aesthetic. A traditional church ceremony can be romantic, but outdoor settings, for example in a garden, can take things to the next level. The wedding I attended took place in our local city hall, which provided an impossibly timeless and romantic backdrop that was perfect for the theme of the day.

Wedding attire

The bride looked stunning in her chic and stylish wedding dress with floral accents. I would say she looked refined yet glamorous in an understated kind of way. The groom, on the other hand, wore a traditional dark blue suit, and when the pair stood together to say their vows, they looked like they had just stepped out of a fairytale. The elegant blush bridesmaids’ dresses and the flowers they held were also chosen to match the overall theme of the wedding.

The reception

After the ceremony, the wedding reception follows. You’ll want to make sure the theme continues from start to finish. This means choosing colors and table décor that match everything else is key. There are also a few other touches you’ll need to include to complete the effect, and here are some pointers for what to think about.

The room

The room where the reception banquet was held was decorated accordingly, with the same light blue and pink tones prominent. One thing that stuck in my mind was the addition of some natural greenery, which added a hint of the enchanted forest to the fairytale setting.

Also notable was the lack of balloons. Although once popular – and still commonly used – they can seem a little cheap nowadays, and I appreciated the way this bride and groom had eschewed their use.

The table

The table was suitably adorned with light pink table napkins, the cutlery was vintage style, and pink petals were scattered tastefully over the tables to add to the romantic feel.

Attention to detail

What separates a nice wedding from a fabulous one is often the attention to detail, and that’s something I also admired at this wedding. If you don’t consciously notice these small details, you can easily miss them, but the overall effect they create can elevate the feel of the whole day. Here are a couple of examples of the things I noticed.

The lighting

In the room where the reception was held and then later back in the garden by the lake as the sun began to set, the area had been decorated with pretty fairy lights, which gave us the impression that we had entered a dreamy fairytale land.

The invitations

If you want to wow your guests, don’t wait until the big day itself. Creating the perfect romantic wedding starts with the invitations, and even the stationery was delightful. The envelopes were made of high-quality matte paper, and the cards hinted at the color scheme of the wedding. The lettering was done in stylish silver calligraphy, and on opening the invitation, you knew this was set to be a beautiful wedding. The invitations also included a photo of the happy couple that must have been created by the same photo editor who worked on the slideshow - because the photo was another one that could never have been taken in real life!
