Planning a wedding in Tulsa? Or are you maybe researching wedding venues for a bride? Tulsa is a special kind of city, not really Southern, not exactly Midwestern, but definitely a city with its own flavor and unique vibe. It is the birthplace of Route 66 and is famous for its Art Deco architecture and multiple amazing wedding venues.

Hey there! I am Kari Bjorn and I am a wedding photographer based in Fayetteville in Northwest Arkansas but I service Tulsa and all of NE Oklahoma as well.

How to choose your wedding venue

There are many factors to consider when choosing the perfect venue for your wedding day. Whether you are looking to have separate locations for your ceremony and reception, or go for a spot that has both options. Choosing a venue is usually the first decision a couple has to make in the wedding planning process. This is because other vendors will need to have your wedding date in order to let you book them, and securing a date with a venue makes the most sense so you don’t have to cancel on your videographer or DJ if the venue of your dreams isn’t available on the day they are.

Factors to consider when choosing your wedding venue — size

First off, size really matters here. You definitely don’t want a venue that is too small for your estimated guest count. Then, on the other hand, booking a venue that is too big can also cause problems. Your photos might all look half-empty and it could be hard to get a real party going during your reception. I good rule of thumb is to look at the capacity and go for 50-60% of that. You can also show the owner or manager photos from other weddings at the venue and ask them how many guests they had. That should give you a good idea.

The shape and design of the venue matters as well

Many older and historical buildings that have been turned into wedding venues have multiple rooms and outside areas. This can be a problem if you want your guests to mingle and interact with everything that is going on. A 2nd photographer is also a helpful addition when you have a venue with multiple rooms.

What is the overall vibe and style of the venue?

This could also be the first thing you can tick off your list. What kind of a vibe will my wedding have? Some venues are like blank canvases, ready for you to decorate and style based on your own taste. Some definitely have their own theme and look. Modern and minimal venues tend to have high ceilings and a lot of white walls, with plenty of natural light coming in through large windows. Barns, on the other hand, have their own look and style and historical venues, mansions, and estates have their own look that is often themed to a certain period in history. Wedding chapels are classic, sometimes they are just a ceremony venue, and sometimes a reception space is available too. Outdoor wedding venues are just that, designed for an outdoor wedding. Many of them have an indoor option on the property though.

What add-ons does the venue offer? What is included in the rental?

Many venues offer ceremony chairs and reception tables in their rental packages, but some don’t. It is always a good idea to ask up front what is actually included, and what can be added on, what you’ll have to source yourself. Some venues offer an in-house coordinator, and many have preferred vendor lists. It can be helpful to ask about those.

Best months for a wedding in Tulsa, OK

Spring and fall are the most popular seasons for weddings in Tulsa and northeast Oklahoma, and for good reason — it can get pretty cold in winter and summers are scorching hot! April and May along with a 6-8 week window from the end of September to early November are generally the best times to have a wedding. It will allow for some time outside for photography and more than likely your ceremony too. Don’t get me wrong, I love a beautiful winter ballroom wedding, but spring and fall are gonna leave you with the most options throughout the planning process. Vendors also get booked on those dates first, so it is usually a good idea to start planning early if you want to have a Saturday in October for your wedding.
