What is a First Look?
Before we start breaking the rules, must we not know them first? I cover this more in detail in my dedicated First Look article. Here is the elevator version. A First Look is a private setup moment between the couple on a wedding day where they see each other for the first time. This is usually done about an hour or two before the ceremony. The biggest benefit of doing a First Look is to spread out photos throughout your day so that you are not doing wedding portraits, family shots, wedding party photos, and pics with uncle Bob and aunt Sue after the ceremony. Something that can take a while to get done in one go.
Many couples still want to have that walking down the aisle moment but still want to do something together before the ceremony. That’s where this article comes in.

What are alternatives to a wedding day first look?
I am so glad you asked! Here’s my list of ideas you can take and be creative with. Feel free to twist and turn these ideas as much as possible. It is your wedding day after all!
First touch. This can be personalized in so many ways. Typically, a first touch is with the hands around a corner or door. You can also do a blindfolded version.
Do a shot together. Tequila, Vodka, Jagermeister? Whatever floats your boat!
Wedding dress or suit reveal with the wedding party.
Write each other a letter, read a poem, or do your vows pre-ceremony.
Prank your partner. Set it up only to have someone else show up. Make sure your photographer and videographer are in on it and hype up your partner in the final moments before the big reveal!
First prayer. A beautiful way to incorporate your religion a bit more into your wedding day. Hold hands face away from each other but let your backs and shoulders touch.
Bring your pets in. Have a mini-portrait session with your four-legged friend. This is a great idea for those who are planning to have a friend or a handler take care of their pet during the ceremony and reception.
A traditional first look with mom, dad, sibling, or other family members or friends.
Give each other a gift. This can be done around a corner or behind doors or frosted glass where you open the gifts at the same time. If you have two photographers, you can open them separately where you are getting ready and see the results when your wedding photo gallery arrives.
