Snaefellsnes Elopement Guide
The Snaefellsnes peninsula in western Iceland is the perfect location for an adventure elopement. The landscapes on the peninsula give you the perfect taste of how incredible Iceland truly is. There are endless waterfalls, sublime mountains and cliffs, rugged lava fields, fjords, and a glacier. Everything you need for your unique elopement day!
Where is Snaefellsnes?
Snaefellsnes peninsula is technically it’s own region when it comes to dividing the island down to parts. It’s all part of westerns Iceland but that also includes the Reykjanes peninsula, the greater Reykjavik area and the remote Westfjords in the northwest. The landscapes on the Snaefellsnes peninsula differ from the other regions so it is better on its own.
Depending on where you are going, you’ll need to drive about 2-3 hours from Reykjavik to get there.
What are the most popular spots?
There are a few locations that are just a tiny bit better for those epic elopement ceremony photos. All of these can be included in a full-day elopement package.
Mt. Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall
Arnarstapi & Hellnar cliffs
Budir black church
Raudfeldsgja gorge
Londrangar cliffs
Djupalonssandur black sand beach
Selvallavatn lake
Berserkjahraun lava field
The best time of year for your elopement
I’ll quote my geology teacher here, “there is no such thing as bad weather in Iceland, there’s only badly dressed people”
He was absolutely right! Every season has it’s pros and cons. Summers may have the highest temperatures and longest days but spring, fall, and winter also have their things too.
Spring tends to still be quite cold, but it’s also the slowest season of the year when it comes to the amount of tourists in the country. Easter time will usually have slightly above freezing temperatures and 12-14 hours of sunlight in a day.
Fall is typically warmer than spring and in late August, you can start to see the northern lights again after the 24 hours of sunlight in summer.
Winter in Iceland are cold and dark, but with the right kind of clothing and plenty of hot coffee and cocoa, it can be the best one. New Years in Iceland is the best!
