Fun and unique inspiration for bridal parties and groomsmen

What are wedding party photos?

Most of the couples I work with are not too excited about the formal photos on their wedding day. There are of course exceptions, but my style is mostly documentary and candid, and formal photos don’t really blend too well in with that style. That said, they are an important part of the wedding day and in most cases, I don’t think they should be skipped.

Wedding party photos are the portion of formal photos that include the wedding party. It can be just the bridesmaids, just the groomsmen, or the whole group. When the couple decides to have a first look, these photos are usually done prior to the ceremony. When there is no first look, we typically take them during cocktail hour, after the ceremony.

Difference between family photos and wedding party photos

Typically on a wedding day, I treat the wedding party a little bit different than the immediate family. We’re mostly looking for what our parents would call nice photos with the family pictures. When it comes to the wedding party, it’s more about fun, movement, and creating something unique.

A simple line-up

Probably the most classic way to take a photo of a wedding party. This shot works really well with smaller groups, around 7-8 people max. Bonus points if you have a furry friend to include in the photo.

Introduce movement

This photo is all about creating contrast between something that’s moving (the wedding party) and something that’s still (the couple)

Create layers

Line members of the wedding party up in different places in the frame. Have some sitting and some standing, and facing in varying degrees toward or away from the camera. This option is excellent for larger groups.

Use stairs

This is another way to create layers in the photo. Have members of the bridal party stand in a staircase. If you have tall and short people in your wedding party, this could be a great idea!

Arms around the groom

What I see time and time again are groomsmen who put their arms around their friend while still wearing their jackets. It’s never a good look! Take off the jackets and bring it in. The groom does not take the jacket off but unbuttons it instead.

Bride’s make up

This one is kind of a bridal portrait but also a wedding party photo. Have all the bridesmaids grab a hair or make-up utensil and bring it up to the bride’s face.

The walking shot

Here’s a shot that I like to take at most weddings. Have the couple walk a few feet on front of the wedding party and capture what happens. A very simple and easy way to get movement into your photos.

Create two lines

For most average sized wedding parties, or about 8-12 people, this works really well. Have about 30-40% of the party seated in front with the rest lined up behind.

Bring your dog in

I am not the biggest proponent of having dogs involved in a wedding ceremony. But definitely bring your dog in for the photos after!
